What is a Terrace Garden?
A terrace garden is necessary for people that don’t have an actual backyard to start a garden. This type of a garden is perfect for people that live in condominiums (condos) and those that have a terrace that they would like to turn into a garden. You can make your small space become a garden if you choose the right plants and flowers. It’s important to see if your terrace has enough sunlight for plants/flowers that need a lot of direct sun. If not, you should get plants and flowers that require less sunlight.
Terrace gardens first became popular with farmers. They often needed to build sloping steps for their farm and therefore, it was popular to have gardens planting around them.
If you happen to live in a place where there are a lot of hills, you may often see these types of gardens as you drive up and down the hills. These are often popular in Asia.
Plants often provide oxygen and give us an upbeat feeling when we look at them. There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and stepping outside to see your garden.
Some terraces can be temperature controlled if they are enclosed. This will allow you to grow your garden year around.
Terrace gardens can also be good for people that have to many hills in their yard or their home is on a slope.
Your terrace garden should have some type of a theme. You may say that its going to have a rose theme. In this way, you can combine red, pink, white and yellow roses together. You can mix it in with some carnations and greenery as well.
If you have the space, it would be appropriate to put a sitting bench on our terrace with a lot of pottery plants and green shrubs outside of it. I have a friend in New York that made his garden with combining petunias with sunflowers. It was an interesting display since she wanted to show different colors and types of flowers. She did it with a lot of artistic touches. She used some large swans that she placed next to her sitting bench. When I visit her, I tend to sit on the bench for hours and sip my iced tea. Its relaxing, entertaining and beautiful.
Another great idea is if you have a backwall on your terrace, you can have vines growing up the wall and use some dwarf trees for decoration. This is often one of the best displays of beauty. You may not know it now, but its important to put some shrubbery in front of the walls as well.
If you want to make it look more like a lush green garden, add some ferns on the terrace. It’s best to make it looks solid green with little flowers if you want a lush green garden.
